Tackling the issue of engineering recruitment head-on, Norbar Torque Tools, the Banbury-based manufacturer of torque tools welcomed 49 young people through its doors in March to encourage take-up of a career in engineering.

The open evening, held at the company’s Beaumont Road headquarters on Thursday 12th March, was aimed at young people between the age of 14 and 19 and who wanted to learn more about a career in engineering.

Philip Brodey, Sales and Marketing Director commented:

“We wanted to give young people a clear idea of what a career in engineering has to offer and encourage them to consider a role in one of the most fast-paced and dynamic sectors. The fact is, we have a major shortfall of skilled engineers in this country and we all need to do our bit to encourage people to realise the opportunities that engineering can bring and the various paths open to them.”

The event enabled people to see inside Norbar’s manufacturing facilities including opportunities to see the latest manufacturing techniques as well as tours of the company’s hi-tech calibration laboratory. Apprentices from past and present were also on hand to discuss the route they had taken into engineering and the various opportunities available including careers in mechanical or electrical engineering and software design.

Norbar currently has 7 apprentices at its Banbury site and has plans to recruit a further 2 throughout the coming year.
